Revtangen BO September 21st

Another morning with very light southeast and decent temperatures, followed around noon by the wind turning south and increasing. Nets open 06-14, netmeter hours approx. 2600. Playback as yesterday. 

Ringed: Common Snipe 1, Tree Pipit 2, Meadow Pipit 15, Winter Wren 2, European Robin 7, Common Blackbird 1, Fieldfare 1, Song Thrush 4, Sedge Warbler 1, Reed Warbler 1, Garden Warbler 5, Blackcap 13, Yellow-browed Warbler 3, Chiffchaff 3, Willow Warbler 2, Goldcrest 6, Coal Tit 1, Blue Tit 12, Great Tit 4, Chaffinch 2, Greenfinch 2, Reed Bunting 2. This Common Snipe was trapped by the large pond in the morning. Enkeltbekkasin.

Revtangen BO September 20th

No wind and low fog around dawn, and the mist-nets caught a lot of dew making them less efficient. Very light easterlies the rest of the morning, turning south and then southwest after noon. Playback at night as yesterday, and Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail and Goldfinch during the day. Nets open 06-14, netmeter hours approx. 2600.

The moth traps produced the third Scarce Bordered Straw so far in September. Pestfagerfly.

Green-brindeled Crescent (Allophyes oxyacanthae) was a new moth species at Revtangen BO in todays catch. Irrfly.

Revtangen BO September 18th

Same weather, same playback strategy. Nets open 06-15. Again, the wind turned south around 12 and very little trapped after that. Netmeter hours approx. 2900. 

Ringed: Great Spotted Woodpecker 1, Meadow Pipit 34, Winter Wren 2, Dunnock 2, Northern Wheatear 1, European Robin 12, Redwing 1, Song Thrush 1, Grasshopper Warbler 1, Garden Warbler 4, Barred Warbler 1, Blackcap 10, Willow Warbler 3, Chiffchaff 11, Goldcrest 9, Great Tit 2, Blue Tit 24, Coal Tit 1, Tree Sparrow 1, Chaffinch 2, Common Linnet 1. Total = 124. Also 5 controls. 


The second Barred Warbler of the autumn was ringed today. Hauksanger.

Lots of Black Darters (Sympetrum danae) are enjoying our new pools at the moment, but so far the warm southerlies has not brought any rare Odonata. Svart høstlibelle.

Weather much as previous days, light easterlies/southeasterlies in the morning, turning south around 11-12. Playback as previous days. Nets open 06-18, netmeter hours approx. 3900. 

Ringed: Grey Wagtail 4, Meadow Pipit 16, Dunnock 1, Northern Wheatear 3 (2 leucorhoa), European Robin 6, Common Blackbird 1, Song Thrush 2, Garden Warbler 7, Blackcap 6, Chiffchaff 8, Yellow-browed Warbler 1, Goldcrest 2, Blue Tit 6, Chaffinch 2, Eurasian Siskin 1. Total = 66. Also 12 controls. 

Surprisingly the Barred Warbler ringed on August 20th and last controlled on August 26th turned up in a mistnet again today. It had gained 8,8 grams since ringed. Hauksanger 1K.

Revtangen BO September 16th

The warm southeast continues. Almost no wind in the early hours, then light SE turning S, increasing and turning back towards SE. Sunny in periods, but also cloudy at times. Playback as yesterday. Nets open 06-19, netmeter hours approx. 4200. 

Ringed: Grey Wagtail 2, Tree Pipit 2, Meadow Pipit 16, Dunnock 2, Winter Wren 3, Northern Wheatear 5 (all leucorhoa), Whinchat 1, European Robin 10, Common Redstart 2, Song Thrush 2, Redwing 1, Common Blackbird 1, Fieldfare 1, Garden Warbler 5, Blackcap 23, Willow Warbler 4, Chiffchaff 14, Yellow-browed Warbler 1, Goldcrest 3, Great Tit 4, Blue Tit 2, Pied Flycatcher 1, House Sparrow 3, Chaffinch 4, Greenfinch 3. The second Yellow-browed Warbler of the season was trapped today. Gulbrynsanger.

Observations: Black-throated Diver 1 flying south, Red-breasted flycatcher 1 (1cy) , Hen Harrier 1, Common Kestrel 2, Yellow Wagtail 2. Notable migration of Red-throated Diver with 41 seen flying south, also lots of Barn Swallows on the move south over the fields to the west. 

The Robinson Traps are still producing migrants, including 137 Silver Y, 8 Rush Veneer (Nomophila noctuella), 1 Dark Sword-grass (Agrotis ipsilon) and 1 Rusty-dot Pearl (Udea ferrugalis). The highlighty today was the second Norwegian record of the tortricid moth Crocidosema plebejana.

Revtangen BO September 15th

The heatwave continues, another night with almost no wind and 18 degrees gave way to another sunny and very warm day. The wind remained SE for a little longer today, but trapping was slow as soon the sun appeared. Playback much as yesterday, Chiffchaff, Garden Warbler and Yellow-browed Warbler through the night and Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail and Chiffchaff by day. Nets open 06-15, netmeter hours approx. 2900. 

Ringed: Sparrowhawk 1, Peregrine Falcon 1, Tree Pipit 1, Meadow Pipit 10, Winter Wren 1, Dunnock 3, Northern Wheatear 1 (leucorhoa), European Robin 5, Song Thrush 1, Redwing 1, Garden Warbler 12, Blackcap 17, Willow Warbler 1, Chiffchaff 11, Goldcrest 1, Great Tit 2, Blue Tit 6, Eurasian Treecreeper 1 (first this season), Tree Sparrow 1, Chaffinch 5, Brambling 2, Greenfinch 9, Lesser Redpoll 3. Total = 96. Also 5 controls. 

1 cy Peregrine Falcon caught in the large nets by the pools. Only the 3rd ever ringed at the bird observatory. 

This Hawk Owl used our net poles at hunting posts during the night, enough lit up by the Robinson traps for the autofocus to work! It disappeared around dawn. Haukugle.

Once again the Robinson traps produced some interesting species:
Two stunning specimens of Merveille du Jour (Griposia aprilina) was a new species for Revtangen BO. Grønt eikefly.

Another Scarce Bordered Straw caught today. Pestfagerfly.

Western Conifer Seed-bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis), probably only the 3rd Norwegian record of this invasive species introduced to Europe from North America.

Revtangen BO September 14th

The unseasonal (for any season!) hot weather continues, today we had the warmest day of the year with tempertures in the high 20ties in the afternoon. Around dawn we had very light easterlies and a cloud cover, perfect trapping conditions but again this was terminated by an irritating wind from the south from around 11. Playback use as yesterday. Nets open 06-14, netmeter hours approx. 2600.

Ringed: Common Kestrel 1, Grey Wagtail 3, Meadow Pipit 11, Dunnock 2, European Robin 9, Common Redstart 1, Fieldfare 2, Song Thrush 2, Reed Warbler 1, Garden Warbler 6, Blackcap 19, Common Whitethroat 1, Chiffchaff 7, Willow Warbler 4, Goldcrest 2, Blue Tit 7, Tree Sparrow 5, Brambling 1, Greenfinch 4, Eurasian Siskin 1, Lesser Redpoll 2, Yellowhammer 1. Total = 92. Also 5 controls, including Reed Bunting and Blue Tit not from Revtangen BO.

Kestrels are rarely trapped and this is only the 9th ringed at Revtangen BO.

Observations: Grey Wagtail ca. 15, Little Bunting 1. 

Our 3 Robinson Traps are out all night during these unusual conditions, today there was a decent collection og migrant moths including 13 Rush Veneer, 1 Rusty-dot Pearl, 75 Silver Y and one Gem.

The Robinson traps also produced a new moth species for Revtangen BO, this Black Rustic (Aporophyula nigra). Stort lyngheifly.

Revtangen BO September 13th

Unusually high temperatures for September at the moment, we had around 17 degrees through the night rising to well above 22 in the middle of the day. Nets open 06-17.30, netmeter hours approx. 3500. Playback on Garden Warbler, European Robin, Chiffchaff and Yellow-browed Warbler through the night, Meadow Pipit, Tree Pipit and Grey wagtail during the day. 

Ringed: Sparrowhawk 2, Collared Dove 2, Tree Pipit 3, Meadow Pipit 17, Grey Wagtail 2, Dunnock 1, European Robin 3, Northern Wheatear 2 (1 leucorhoa), Redwing 1, Song Thrush 1, Garden Warbler 2, Blackcap 8, Willow Warbler 1, Chiffchaff 7, Yellow-browed Warbler 1 (first this season), Coal Tit 1, House Sparrow 8, Tree Sparrow 8, Chaffinch 5, Greenfinch 8, Lesser Redpoll 1, Reed Bunting 1. Total = 85. Also 4 controls. 

The highlight in the robinson traps this morning was no doubt the Scarce Bordered Straw (Helicoverpa armigera), probably the first record in Norway since the invasion in 2006.

Revtangen BO September 12th

Another evening session with 9 walk-in traps at Revtangen 18-21 produced 38 Dunlin, 1 Common Ringed Plover and 11 Sanderling. Total = 50.

50 Brent geese migrated south, and two Peregrines (adult and 1 cy) hunted waders in the area.

A short session with 7 walk-in traps at Revtangen 18-21 resulted in 8 Bar-tailed Godwits, 33 Dunlin, 1 Common Ringed Plover and 9 Red Knots. Total = 51. 

1cy Bar-tailed Godwit. A new colourringing project on Bar-tailed Godwits initiated in Norway in 2016.
This oddly shaped Bar-tailed Godwit had very short and thick tibia, and could not be colour-ringed. Notice also the extra toe!

Revtangen OS September 8th

Another gloomy morning with a heavy cover of clouds.Very light easterlies that turned south and increased, after 12 the wind was too strong and the nets were closed around 13. Nets open 05.30-13, netmeter hours approx. 2500. Playback on Reed Warbler, Garden Warbler and Grasshopper Warbler through the night, but with little success. Playback on Grey Wagtail, Meadow Pipit and Tree Pipit during the morning saved a decent catch.

Revtangen BO September 7th

Light easterlies in the morning under a heavy cover of clouds. The wind turned south and increased to 5-6 m/s around noon. Nets open 05.30-19, netmeter hours approx. 4400. Playback on Garden Warbler, Reed Warbler and Grasshopper Warbler throught the night, but with very little effect. More efficient were playback on Meadow Pipit and Tree Pipit during the day, while playback on Grey Wagtail producet nothing today.

Revtangen BO September 5th

Light easterlies in the morning, turning south and increasing, from around 11.30 windy and sunny and no birds were trapped after 12. Nets open 05.30-13.30, netmeter hours approx. 2500. Playback on Reed Warbler, Garden Warbler and Grasshopper Warbler through the night, Tree Pipit, Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail and European Goldfinch during the day. 

Ringed: Grey Wagtail 7, Tree Pipit 2, OLIVE-BACKED PIPIT 1, Meadow Pipit 27, European Robin 2, Redwing 1, Fieldfare 2, Grasshopper warbler 2, Reed Warbler 4, Garden Warbler 6, Blackcap 11, Willow Warbler 3, Chiffchaff 2, Blue Tit 1, Eurasian Nuthatch 1, Greenfinch 1. Total = 73. 

A record-early Olive-backed Pipit was no doubt the bird of the day. This is the 10th ringed at Revtangen BO. Sibirpiplerke.

Revtangen BO September 4th

Light northeasterlies that turned north around noon. Sunny. Nets open 05.30-21, netmeter hours around 5000. Playback on Garden Warbler, Reed Warbler and Grasshopper Warbler through the night, and Meadow Pipit, Tree Pipit, Common Linnet, Grey Wagtail (until around 11) and Nutcracker (from around 11). Today felt like the first day of autumn, with the first Winter Wrens and Song Thrushes this autumn trapped in the early hours.

Ringed: Barn Swallow 1, Tree Pipit 1, Meadow Pipit 74, Grey Wagtail 2, Winter Wren 2,  European Robin 3, Common Redstart 3, Redwing 2, Song Thrush 2, Fieldfare 2, Grasshopper Warbler 2, Reed Warbler 2, Blackcap 11, Garden Warbler 8, Common Whitethroat 3, Willow Warbler 5, Chiffchaff 2, Blue Tit 1, Spotted Flycatcher 1, House Sparrow 2, Tree Sparrow 3, SPOTTED NUTCRACKER 1, Chaffinch 4, Greenfinch 1, Common Linnet 4. Total = 145. Also 5 controls. 

There are invasive movements of Spotted Nutcrackers in SW Norway at the moment. This one is a 1cy of the nominate subspecies, the first ringed at the BO since 1999.

Observations: Osprey 1, Sparrowhawk 20, Marsh Harrier 1, European Goldfinch 2, Great Spotted Woodpecker 1, Grey Wagtail 10.

The last 5 days have been nothing but wind and rain. Today the rain cleared but the wind was in the west, although not very strong. Nets open 07.30-17.30, netmeter hours approx. 3200. Playback on Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail and Common Linnet.
