The first red-breasted flycatcher in 2015 was also the earliest ever autumn record, most are trapped in September. This bird can be aged as a 1 cy by the buff wedge-shaped tips to the greater coverts, creating a rusty wing-bar. Dvergfluesnapper 1K, det tidligste høstfunnet noen gang på Revtangen OS.

1 cy ortolan bunting. This is only the third to be ringed at Revtangen BO, the last one was in 1983. 1K hortulan, den første på Revtangen OS siden 1983.

Two painted ladies (Vanessa cardui) stayed in the garden all day, together with 25-30 red admirals.

Revtangen BO August 30th

Today was "Open day" for the public at Revtangen BO between 09 and 15. The weather turned out to be better than forecasted a couple of days ago, with mostly sunny and a southerly breeze which was a bit too strong at times. The nets were open from 07-16, in addition we used 7 walk-in traps and 10 spring traps down at the beach at Revtangen. Trapping proved to be a bit of a challenge today, but as the sun and wind made trapping in the garden difficult after lunch, the traps at Revtangen produced enough dunlins so that everyone who visited us could see at least a couple of species ringed.

Ringed: Dunlin 23, redshank 1, meadow pipit 19, barn swallow 2, whinchat 1, european robin 1, redwing 1, reed warbler 5, garden warbler 4, common whitethroat 1, willow warbler 3, starling 3, house sparrow 9, chaffinch 2. Total = 76.

Ringmerket: Myrsnipe 23, rødstilk 1, heipiplerke 19, låvesvale 2, buskskvett 1, rødstrupe 1, rødvingetrost 1, rørsanger 6, hagesanger 4, tornsanger 1, løvsanger 3, stær 3, gråspurv 9, bokfink 2. Total = 76.

Lots of red admirals for people to admire in the trapping garden today. Admiral.

This Least Yellow Underwing (Noctua interjecta) was the highlight of a poor result in the two moth traps we ran during the night. Brunt båndfly.

Bird Observatory team today: Amalie Ask, Ingvald Ekeland, Atle Fiskå, Asbjørn Folvik, Håvard Husebø, Alf Tore Mjøs, Bjørn-Tore Rekve Seim, Elisabeth Årsnes. At least 311 persons visited during the day, 191 adults and 120 children.

Revtangen August 28th - wader ringing

Today we tried trapping waders again, with 7 walk-in traps and 10 spring traps at Revtangen from around 09-15. Not a lot of waders in the area, but the rather strong SW made trapping with mistnets in the trapping garden impossible and the waders was our best chance for a decent catch.

Ringed: Dunlin 55, sanderling 1, red knot 8, turnstone 7, redshank 2 (one robusta), starling 5. Total = 78.

Ringmerket: Myrsnipe 55, sandløper 1, polarsnipe 8, steinvender 7, rødstilk 2 (1 robusta), stær 5. Total = 78.

The bird of the day was this colourringed lesser black-backed gull, one of 3 colourringed gulls read at Revesanden today. Blue JRN5 was ringed as a chick at Rauna in Farsund, 103 km to the SE from Revtangen, in July 1999. It was sighted once in Vendée, France in April 2004 and then it was not seen for more than 11 years before yesterday. It is very unusual that a colourringed gull with a well readable colourring goes unreported for such a long time.

Colourringed gulls from Norway have black, white, green or blue colourrings, always starting with the letter "J". They can be reported here: http://www.ringmerking.no/cr/

Observations: Merlin 1 (took a wader for lunch), red-throated diver 3 migrating south, little gull 1 first-winter going south.

Revtangen BO August 27th

Today was mainly about preparing for "open day" at Revtangen BO on Sunday 30th, fun jobs like vacuuming, washing dirty bird bags, replacing worn-out mistnets etc. But we kept most of the nets open from 09-15.30, and despite too much wind the catch was decent. Total netmeter hours approx. 1600. Playback on meadow pipit and tree pipit.

Ringed: Meadow pipit 23, tree pipit 1, grasshopper warbler 1, icterine warbler 1, sedge warbler 1, garden warbler 3, barred warbler 1, common whitethroat 1, willow warbler 9, spotted flycatcher 1, treecreeper 1, common starling 42. Total = 85. Also 10 controls.

Ringmerket: Heipiplerke 23, trepiplerke 1, gresshoppesanger 1, gulsanger 1, sivsanger 1, hagesanger 3, hauksanger 1, tornsanger 1, løvsanger 9, gråfluesnapper 1, trekryper 1, stær 42. Total = 85. Også 10 kontroller.

The first treecreeper of the autumn. Høstens første trekryper.

Barred wabler and icterine warbler, both are 1 cy. Hauksanger og gulsanger, begge er 1K.

Observations: Peregrine 3, reed warbler 5.

Revtangen BO August 24th

Still ESE and warm, but too windy in the middle part of the day for any efficient trapping. Nets open 05.30-14.30, netmeter hours approx. 3000. Playback on garden warbler, reed warbler and grasshopper warbler through the night and early morning, tree pipit later on.

Ringed: Sparrowhawk 1, tree pipit 3, european robin 1, redstart 4, redwing 1, reed warbler 2, garden warbler 9, willow warbler 22, pied flycatcher 4, spotted flycatcher 1. Total = 48.

Willow warbler is by far the most numerous passerine ringed at Revtangen BO, and this one ringed today was willow warbler number 20.000 for Revtangen BO! Løvsanger nr. 20.000 på Revtangen OS.

Observations: Kestrel 1, sparrowhawk 3, temminck's stint 1, yellow wagtail 1, grasshopper warbler 1

This kestrel frequented the trapping area today, using the net poles as hunting posts. It already had a ring with a number probably starting with the letter "S", so very likely a bird from Finland. It even flew into a mistnet and escaped....frustrating. Denne tårnfalken, tilsynelatende merket i Finland, unnslapp nettmaskene i dag. Frustrerende.....

Revtangen BO August 23rd

Sunny and warm, eastern winds turning south and then back east in the afternoon. Playback on garden warbler, reed warbler and grasshopper warbler through the night and morning. Nets open from 05.30-16.30, netmeter hours 3600.

Ringed: Goshawk 1, meadow pipit 4, dunnock 2, european robin 1, redstart 1, redwing 1, sedge warbler 3, reed warbler 5, garden warbler 2, lesser whitethroat 2, willow warbler 9, pied flycatcher 3, spotted flycatcher 4, tree sparrow 1, house sparrow 2, chaffinch 2. Total = 43. Also 5 controls.

Ringmerket: Hønsehauk 1, heipiplerke 4, jernspurv 2, rødstjert 1, rødstrupe 1, rødvingetrost 1,  sivsanger 3, rørsanger 5, hagesanger 2, møller 2, løvsanger 9, svarthvit fluesnapper 3, gråfluesnapper 4, pilfink 1, gråspurv 2, bokfink 2. Total = 43. Også 5 kontroller.

Goshawk, 2 cy female. After flying THROUGH two of our mist-nets she finally landet in one that could hold her. Hønsehauk, 2k hunn.

Lesser whitethroat is a scarce bird at Revtangen, with less than 15 birds ringed in an average year. This 1 cy had obvious fault bars on the tail, indicating food stress when the tail was growing. Many insect-eating birds seems to have had a poor breeding season, not surprising considering the unusually cold spring and early summer in much of Scandinavia. Møller 1K.

Observations: Green sandpiper 2, sparrowhawk 3, kestrel 1, yellow wagtail 1. Enormous haching of small green midges (Chironomidae).

Revtangen BO August 18th

Mainly sunny and ESE breeze, increasing wind, too windy and very poor trapping conditions after late morning. Nets were open 05.30-21.30, netmeter hours approx. 5000. Playback on garden warbler, reed warbler and grasshopper warbler through the night and early morning, linnet and tree pipit later in the morning, willow warbler and barn swallow later in the day. Playback had very little effect after the first small rush of warblers just after dawn.

Ringed: Sparrowhawk 1, barn swallow 2, northern wheatear 1, redstart 3, grasshopper wabler 1, reed warbler 5, sedge warbler 1, icterine warbler 1, common whitethroat 2, garden warbler 6, willow warbler 37, pied flycatcher 2, spotted flycatcher 3, house sparrow 7, chaffinch 1, linnet 6. Total = 79. Also 7 controls.

Ringmerket: Spurvehauk 1, låvesvale 2, steinskvett 1, rødstjert 3, gresshoppesanger 1, rørsanger 5, sivsanger 1, gulsanger 1, tornsanger 2, hagesanger 6, løvsanger 37, svarthvit fluesnapper 2, gråfluesnapper 3, gråspurv 7, bokfink 1, tornirisk 6. Total = 79.

Two new species in the 2015 ringing total today. 3 spotted flycatchers included two first-years and this adult (top), notice the new middle tertial but otherwise worn adult plumage. The icterine warbler (lower) can also be aged as an adult based on the very worn plumage. Both these species will undertake a complete moult after they reach the winter quarters.

A surprise find today of a new specis of dragonfly at Revtangen BO, Somatochlora arctica. This species has not been recorded at Jaeren since 1935. Two individuals were collected, one was trapped in a mist net.

Revtangen August 17th - continued wader ringing

The numbers of waders were slightly down from yesterday, in particular sanderlings and red knots had left during the night or early morning. But still worth a trapping effort, and we put out 9 walk-in traps and 10 spring traps from around 9-18.

Ringed: Red knot 8, dunlin 223, sanderling 4, little stint 12, common ringed plover 4, common sandpiper 1, turnstone 10, starling 2. Total = 264. Also a control of an adult dunling with a ring from Portugal.

Ringmerket: Polarsnipe 8, myrsnipe 223, sandløper 4, dvergsnipe 12, sandlo 4, strandsnipe 1, steinvender 10, stær 2. Total = 264.

Dunlin ringed in Portugal. Myrsnipe med portugisisk ring.

A record 11 grey seals were seen in the calm weather today, some of them very vocal and we could enjoy their strange song througout the day. 11 havert ble registrert i stille vær i dag, det høyeste antallet vi har registrert på Revtangen.

Large numbers of this tiny black fly was displaying in the vegetaion just behind the beach today, bobbing their behind up and down and flicking their wings. They are of the family Sepsidae, and probably the genus Themira (often referred to as black scavenger flies). En art av svingfluer (Sepsidae), trolig tilhørende slekten Themira.

Revtangen August 12th - continued wader ringing

We tried wader ringing again today, with 6 walk-in traps and 10 spring traps between 09-15. Even though numbers were down compared to the wet and miserable evening before, there was still enough for a decent catch.

Revtangen BO August 7th

A short wader session from around 10.30-14.30 with 6 wader traps at Revtangen gave 52 ringed and 1 foreign control: bar-tailed godwit 5 adults, red knot 1 adult, redshank 1 juvenile, little stint 3 juveniles, dunlin 42. In addition a control of an adult red knot ringed in Iceland.

Little stints ringd in Norway are colourringed with a yellow ring on right tibia with a 3-letter inscription. Dvergsnipe 1K. Sightings can be repoted to Kjell Mork Soot at kjellmorksoot@fugler.com

This adult red knot was already colourringed by a Norwegian project studying the migration of the western subspecies C.canutus islandica. This bird was one of 1100 red knots colourringed in NW Iceland in May 2014. All birds in this project have yellow flags with a 3-letter or two digit inscription. Birds ringed in Iceland carry flags on the right tibia, while birds ringed in the north of Norway carry flags on the left tibia. Markers (single colourring) on opposite tibia can be yellow or red. Sightings can be reported to Jim Wilson at: jimwils@frisurf.no

Revtangen BO August 6th - first wader catch

No trapping with mist nets today, too windy and the forecast promised some rain in the morning. But waders are arriving in numbers since the day before yesterday, and still increasing today in SE wind with some showers. So we put together the wader trapping gear and tried 4 walk-in traps in the afternoon from around 15-20 hours. The catch was decent for such a small effort, with 4 red knot (2 adults, 2 juveniles), 1 adult sanderling, 1 juvenile little stint, 1 starling and 59 dunlin (6 adults, 53 juveniles). Total = 66.

Ringmerket: Polarsnipe 4, dvergsnipe 1, sandløper 1, myrsnipe 59, stær 1. Total = 66.

Adult red knot. Polarsnipe (2K+).
Observations:
Reveparken: Goshawk 1 cy, rook 8.
Revtangen: 500+ waders, mostly dunlins but smaller numbers of red knot, sanderling, turnstone, ruff, little stint, redshank and common ringed plover. Also 1 juv. spotted redshank, 1 adult curlew sandpiper, 1 adult grey plover, 1 juvenile black-tailed godwit (ssp. islandica) and a few whimbrel and greenshank. 2 Great skuas were close over the beach, 2 sandwich terns migrated south and a 2cy peregrine harassed the waders.

Revtangen BO August 5th

Winds from the south, 7-10 m/s. Too much for efficient trapping, since our mist-nats are poorly protected from this wind direction. Most nets were up from 07.30-15.l30, but only 13 birds ringed: Willow warbler 6, coal tit 1, house sparrow 1, tree sparrow 1, linnet 4.

Ringmerket: Løvsanger 6, svartmeis 1, gråspurv 1, pilfink 1, tornirisk 4.

Observations:
Bird Observatory: Common buzzard 1, whimbrel 1, wood sandpiper 1, grasshopper warbler 1 singing in the evening to the east.
Revtangen: Around 350 waders, including 250 dunlin, 25 sanderling, 15 little stint (most adults), 10 bar-tailed godwit (1 colourringed read and reported), 2 adult grey plovers and a few turnstones and red knots. Juvenile ruff are starting to move through, with around 50 seen in the fields and a few (including an adult female) also feeding at Revtangen.

The small highlight was this 1 cy coal tit, the first in 2015. Svartmeis, 1K.

Two Robinson-traps produced 48 moth species, including a first for Revtangen BO: This Golden Plusia (Polychrysia moneta). Tyrihjelmfly.

Revtangen BO August 3rd - ringing around the clock

Finally the wind died off almost completely, and shifted back into our more favoured SE. So we went "all in" trapping through the night and continued at the bird observatory in the morning! An effort to trap Green Sandpiper by the new pond using playback in the dark hours was terminated early because there were too many bats around the nets. So we turned all our attention to Reve Kai just nort of the bird observatory, where European Storm Petrels are tape-lured and trapped with mist-nets at night. 6 petrels were trapped, bringing the total to 14 so far this year. Two mist-nets on the beach with Common Sandpiper playback also produced two Common Sandpipers, and oddly enough, a Sedge Wabler at 3 o'clock....

One of the 14 European Storm Petrels trapped so far in 2015. Havsvale. Photo: Bjørn Mo.

At the bird observatory nets were open 05-17, netmeter hours approx. 4000. Playback on green sandpiper, linnet, willow warbler (08-10) and barn swallow (10-17). An effort with playback on garden warbler and grasshopper warbler in the early hours produced nothing, so probably still too early for any noteworthy migration.

Ringed (Reve Kai and bird observatory combined): Europeand storm petrel 6, common sandpiper 2, green sandpiper 2, barn swallow 13, white wagtail 3, sedge warbler 1, common whitethroat 2, willow warbler 17, starling 20, tree sparrow 1, house sparrow 1, greenfinch 10, linnet 9, lesser redpoll 5. Total = 93. Also 5 controls.

Ringmerket: Havsvale 6, strandsnipe 2, skogsnipe 2, låvesvale 13, linerle 3, sivsanger 1, tornsanger 2, løvsanger 17, stær 20, pilfink 1, gråspurv 1, grønnfink 10, tornirisk 9, brunsisik 5. Total = 93. Også 5 kontroller.
