Revtangen BO September 17th

Nets open 06-14, netmeter hours approx. 2900. Playback on Garden Warbler and Pallas' Grasshopper Warbler at night, European Robin at dawn and Grey Wagtail and Olive-backed Pipit during the day. 

Ringed: Great Spotted Woodpecker 3, Tree Pipit 1, Meadow Pipit 3, Grey Wagtail 3, Winter Wren 3, European Robin 12, Whinchat 1, Redwing 1, Song Thrush 2, Common Blackbird 2, Garden Warbler 8, Blackcap 17, Common Whitethroat 1, Willow Warbler 1, Chiffchaff 4, Goldcrest 8, Great Tit 2, Blue Tit 1, Willow Tit 1, Eurasian Nuthatch 1, Common Treecreeper 2, House Sparrow 1, Greenfinch 2, Brambling 2, European Goldfinch 1, Yellowhammer 3, Reed Bunting 2. Ringed: Water Rail 1, Great Spotted Woodpecker 7, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker 1, Grey Wagtail 9, Meadow Pipit 30, Winter Wren 6, Dunnock 1, European Robin 5, Song Thrush 3, Redwing 2, Grasshopper Warbler 2, Reed Warbler 1, Garden Warbler 6, Blackcap 13, Common Whitethroat 1, Willow Warbler 4, Chiffchaff 2, Goldcrest 6, Coal Tit 5, Great Tit 1, Willow Tit 2, Eurasian Nuthatch 3, Treecreeper 1, Chaffinch 4, Brambling 3, Greenfinch 5, Yellowhammer 1. The first Water Rail this season was trapped today. As usual, a 1cy.  Vannrikse 1K.

Revtangen Septamber 9th - Wader ringing

The bad weather with wind and rain yesterday brought an increase of waders to Revtangen. We put out 9 walk-in traps from 9-19, and also 7 clapnets for a few hours. Despite lots of disturbance from walkers and photographers we still managed a good catch.

Ringed: Bar-tailed Godwit 10, Common Ringed Plover 4, Dunlin 273, Sanderling 6, Curlew Sandpiper 1, Little Stint 3, Red Knot 6, Redshank 1, Turnstone 12, Rock Pipit 2, Common Starling 4. 

Ringmerket: Lappspove 10, sandlo 4, myrsnipe 273, sandløper 6, tundrasnipe 1, dvergsnipe 3, polarsnipe 6, rødstilk 1, steinvender 12, skjærpiplerke 2, stær 4. Total = 322. 

An adult Pectoral Sandpiper frequented the trapping area today, but not the walk-in traps......Alaskasnipe.

Revtangen BO September 7th

Most nets open 07-11, rain after that. Netmeter hours approx. 1200. Playback on Tre Pipit, Meadow Pipit and Grey Wagtail. 9 Walk-in traps at Revtangen ca. 14-17.

Ringed: Bar-tailed Godwit 2, Dunlin 32, Red Knot 3, Sanderling 8, Turnstone 2, Grey Wagtail 4, Tree Pipit 1, Meadow Pipit 35, Rock Pipit 1, Winter Wren 1, Blackcap 1, Willow Warbler 1, Chiffchaff 1, Goldcrest 2, Greenfinch 1. Total = 95. 

Ringmerket: Lappspove 2, myrsnipe 32, polarsnipe 3, sandløper 8, steinvender 2, vintererle 4,  trepiplerke 1, heipiplerke 35, skjærpiplerke 1, gjerdesmett 1, munk 1, løvsanger 1, gransanger 1, fuglekonge 2, grønnfink 1. Total = 95.

The first Rock Pipit we've trapped in a long time was duly equipped with a yellow colourring from the Norwegian Rock Pipit project. Any sightings of birds with yellow rings or green rings can be reported to kjellmorksoot@fugler.com. Skjærpiplerke.

Revtangen BO September 6th

After terrible weather with rain and strong SE yesterday the number of waders at Revtangen had increased. We put up mistnets 08.30-12 and used 9 walk-in traps and 7 clapnets at Revtangen from around 13-19.30. Playback on Meadow Pipit 08.30-11. 

Ringed: Bar-tailed Godwit 17, Dunlin 69, Red Knot 5, Sanderling 7, Turnstone 1, Common Ringed Plover 2, Common Redshank 2, White Wagtail 1, Meadow Pipit 61, European Robin 1, Blackcap 2, Common Whitethroat 1, Eurasian Nuthatch 1, Chaffinch 2, Brambling 4, Greenfinch 1, Common Linnet 1, Yellowhammer 1. Total = 179. Also 4 controls, including the first ever Bar-tailed Godwit with a ring from Finland found in Norway. 

Ringmerket: Lappspove 17, myrsnipe 69, polarsnipe 5, sandløper 7, steinvender 1, sandlo 2, rødstilk 2, linerle 1, heipiplerke 61, rødstrupe 1, munk 2, tornsanger 1, spettmeis 1, bokfink 2, bjørkefink 4, grønnfink 1, tornirisk 1, gulspurv 1. Total = 179. Også 4 kontroller, inkl. den forste lappspoven med finsk ring noen gang funnet i Norge.

BIRDIE NAM-NAM: 18 Bar-tailed Godwits were colourringed today, including a juvenile with a ring from Finland. Only one adult aming them.

Revtangen BO September 4th

Very light SE to no wind at all in the early morning, sunny and then gradually more cloudy. Increasing wind from SE-SSE, from around 11 trapping was inefficient because of wind. Playback through the night on Garden Warbler, Reed Warbler, Grasshopper Warbler and Aquatic Warbler. Later in the morning on Grey Wagtail, Tree Pipit, Meadow Pipit and Eurasian Nuthatch. 

Ringed: Sparrowhawk 1 (1cy female, first this season), Great Spotted Woodpecker 2, Meadow Pipit 23, Tree Pipit 2, "Greenland" Wheatear 1, European Robin 1, Grasshopper Warbler 3, BLYTH'S REED WARBLER 1, Garden Warbler 10, Blackcap 6, Common Whitethroat 3, Willow Warbler 5, Goldcrest 1, Spotted Flycatcher 1, Great Tit 1. Total = 61.

Ringmerket: Spurvehauk 1 (første i 2017), flaggspett 2, heipiplerke 23, trepiplerke 2, "Grønlands"steinskvett 1, rødstrupe 1, gresshoppesanger 3, BUSKSANGER 1, hagesanger 10, munk 6, tornsanger 3, løvsanger 5, fuglekonge 1, gråfluesnapper 1, kjøttmeis 1. Total = 61. 

Grasshopper Warblers (1cy). Aged by fresh plumage. The under-tail coverts on one of the birds was slightly atypical, with the dark smudge centered around the feather shaft in a manner similar to Lanceolated Warbler, but in the latter species the streaks are thinner and doesn't reach the base of the feathers like they do on this Grasshopper Warbler. The pictures show two different individuals.
Gresshoppesanger 1K. 

Observations: The increasing SE brought a few raptors, including adult female Marsh Harrier, 1cy Hen Harrier, 5-7 Sparrowhawks, 2 Common Kestrels and a Peregrine. Apart from that little of notice apart from a couple of Grey Wagtails and a Nuthatch.

Revtangen BO September 3rd

Very ligh easterlies to no wind at all in the morning. Later increasing from the SW and very little trapped after 12. Playback on Garden Warbler, Reed Warbler, Aquatic Warbler and Grasshopper Warbler brought a small fall of warblers just after dawn, and the day produced a typical nice selection of early autumn migrants. Nets open 06-16, netmeter hours approx. 3600. Playback on Grey Wagtail, Tree Pipit, Meadow Pipit and Eurasian Nuthatch later in the morning/day. 

Ringed: Green Sandpiper 1, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker 1, Barn Swallow 1, Grey Wagtail 4, Tree Pipit 4, Meadow Pipit 88, Winter Wren 1, Dunnock 1, "Greenland" Wheatear 1, Common Redstart 1, European Robin 1, Grasshopper Warbler 1, Sedge Warbler 1, Reed Warbler 2, Garden Warbler 14, Blackcap 12, Common Whitethroat 1, Willow Warbler 5, Goldcrest 2, Great Tit 1, Eurasian Nuthatch 2, Treecreeper 1, Pied Flycatcher 1, Tree Sparrow 6, Chaffinch 1, Reed Bunting 1. Total = 155. Also 5 controls. 

Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, 1cy female. First this season. 1K F dvergspett.


Observations: Hen Harrier 2cy male, Sparrowhawk 5, Common Kestrel 1, Ruff 50, Great Spotted Woodpecker 2.

Revtangen BO September 2nd

Quite strong NW during the night gave way for a light NE in the morning. No playback at night, but we put up most nets (apart from the ones in the north) from 07.15-14.30. Netmeter hours approx. 2200. Playback on Meadow Pipit, Tree Pipit and Grey Wagtail. 

Ringed: White Wagtail 1, Tree Pipit 2, Meadow Pipit 58, Blackcap 1, Willow Warbler 2, Chaffinch 1, Brambling 1, Yellowhammer 2. Total = 68. Also a control of a 1cy Meadow Pipit not from Revtangen. 

Ringmerket: Linerle 1, trepiplerke 2, heipiplerke 58, munk 1, løvsanger 2, bokfink 1, bjørkefink 1, gulspurv 2. Total = 68. Også en kontroll av en heipiplerke med fremmed norsk ring.

Today we caught an unusually large Meadow Pipit. The birds was an adult, as shown by the complete set of adult feathers on all wing coverts. The wing measured 90,5 mm, by far the longest wing we've ever seen on a Meadow Pipit.
