Revtangen BO May 30th

We managed a few hours of ringing today, nice and only a light shifting breeze in the morning but the wind turned NW again from around 9 and trapping was slow after that. Nets up 06-13, Netmeter-hours approx. 2300.

Ringed: Collared dove 6, barn swallow 1, meadow pipit 1, chiffchaff 1, house sparrow 6, tree sparrow 1, chaffinch 1, siskin 2, lesser redpoll 8, linnet 2. Total = 29. Also 10 controls. The first juvenile house sparrows of the season were trapped.

Ringmerket: Tyrkerdue 6, låvesvale 1, heipiplerke 1, gransanger 1, gråspurv 6, pilfink 1, bokfink 1, grønnsisik 2, brunsisik 8, tornirisk 2. Total = 29. Også 10 kontroller. De første juvenile gråspurvene ble fanget i dag. 

May 2015 has officially been the coldest in 36 years in southern Norway, and also one of the wettest. And also one of the poorest spring totals for Revtangen BO in a long time....very few days with weather conditions that allowed any trapping.

Revtangen BO May 21st

All the nets were open from 05.30-14, netmeter hours approx. 2800. Shifting breeze, 2 m/s from the SE turning west 4 m/s. 47 studens and 2 teachers from Sandnes VGS visited the station from around 9-11.30. 

Ringed: White wagtail 1, fieldfare 4, sedge warbler 2, garden warbler 1, common whitethroat 2, chiffchaff 1, starling 1, tree sparrow 1, chaffinch 1, greenfinch 1, lesser redpoll 16, siskin 3, linnet 1. Total = 35. Also 8 controls. 

Ringmerket: Linerle 1, gråtrost 4, sivsanger 2, hagesanger 1, tornsanger 2, gransanger 1, stær 1, pilfink 1, bokfink 1, grønnfink 1, brunsisik 16, grønnsisik 3, tornirisk 1. Total = 35.

Revtangen BO May 20th

Not much wind in the morning, increasing from the south and too much for efficient trapping in the middle of the day. Less wind and only shifting breeze in the evening. The most of the nets were up from around 07.30-20, netmeterhours approx. 2800. 

Ringed: Collared dove 4, tree pipit 2, white wagtail 1, redstart 1, sedge warbler 2, willow warbler 6, starling 1, house sparrow 2, chaffinch 1, greenfinch 5, lesser redpoll 4. Total = 29. Also 16 controls.

Ringmerket: Tyrkerdue 4, trepplerke 2, linerle 1, rødstjert 1, sissanger 2, løvsanger 6, stær 1, gråspurv 2, bokfink 1, grønnfink 5, brunsisik 4. Total = 29. Også 16 kontroller.


In the evenling around 25 people from Klepp Rotary visited the bird observatory for a presentation and a ringing demonstration.

Revtangen BO May 15th

Finally a day with little wind. Almost no wind in the early morning, from around 10 a 3-4 m/s westerly breeze. Not ideal, but the nets were up all day from 05.30-19.30, 40 new birds trapped was decent given the lack of eastern winds. Netmeterhours = approx.4600. 

Ringed: Wood pigeon 2, collared dove 6, barn swallow 2,  meadow pipit 3, "Greenland" wheatear 2, sedge warbler 5, common whitethroat 3, lesser whitethroat 1, blackcap 1, willow warbler 1, starling 2, tree sparrow 1, house sparrow 2, greenfinch 3, linnet 1, lesser redpoll 4. Total = 40. Also 21 controls.

Ringmerket: Ringdue 2, tyrkerdue 6, låvesvale 2, heipiplerke 3, steinskvett (leucorhoa) 2, sivsanger 5, tornsanger 3, møller 1, munk 1, løvsanger 1, stær 2, pilfink 1, gråspurv 2, grønnfink 3, tornirisk 1, brunsisik 4. Total = 40. Også 21 kontroller. 

A record 7 collared doves were trapped today. 1 control of a bird ringed in June 2014 and 6 new birds. 7 tyrkerduer ble fanget i dag, en kontroll fra juni 2014 og 6 nymerkinger. 

Sightings: Red-throated divers and arctic terns were moving over the sea, we counted 27 of the first and 70-100 of the latter, but we spent very little time looking at the sea. There was also a small movement of hirundines along the sanddunes, both house martins, sand martins and barn swallows but only in small numbers. Gadwall two males and one female flew over, black-tailed godwit ca. 5 displaying, golden plover 30-40, whimbrel heard.

Revtangen BO May 9th

Today we were granted 7 hours of ringing, before the wind and rain set in again. Eastern breeze, cloudy, but still very cold, only 2 degrees in the morning. Nets were up from 05.30-13.30, netmeterhours approx. 2900. 

Ringed: Collared dove 4, meadow pipit 4, redstart 2, blackcap 3, common whitethroat 3, lesser whitethroat 1, chiffchaff 5, willow warbler 26, pied flycatcher 1, great tit 1, house sparrow 10, chaffinch 2, greenfinch 8, lesser redpoll 2, mealy redpoll 2, linnet 4, goldfinch 2. Total = 81. Also 40 controls, including a meadow pipit ringed in Belgium.

Ringmerket: Tyrkerdue 4, heipiplerke 4, rødstjert 2, munk 3, tornsanger 3, møller 1, gransanger 5, løvsanger 26, svarthvit fluesnapper 1, kjøttmeis 1, gråspurv 10, bokfink 2, grønnfink 8, brunsisik 3, gråsisik 2, tornirisk 4, stillits 2. Total = 81. Også 40 kontroller, inkl. en heipiplerke med belgisk ring.

Revtangen BO May 5th

Another break in the continous bad weather allowed us six hours of ringing today, and the nets were open from 06-12.30. Netmeter-hours approx. 1800. 

Ringed: Collared dove 2, barn swallow 1, meadow pipit 2, redstart 1, fieldfare 1, blackbird 1, sedge warbler 1, lesser whitethroat 1, common whitethroat 1, blackcap 1, chiffchaff 2, willow warbler 26, pied flycatcher 1, house sparrow 3, chaffinch 2, greenfinch 3, linnet 1, mealy redpoll 1, lesser redpoll 2, yellowhammer 1. Total = 54. Also 11 controls. 

Ringmerket: Tyrkerdue 2, låvevale 1, heipiplerke 2, rødstjert 1, gråtrost 1, svarttrost 1, sivsanger 1, møller 1, tornsanger 1, munk 1, gransanger 2, løvsanger 26, svarthvit fluesnapper 1, gråspurv 3, bokfink 2, grønnfink 3, tornirisk 1, gråsisik 1, brunsisik 2, gulspurv 1.Total = 54. Også 11 kontroller.

The first sedge warbler of the season was ringed today. Sivsanger.

In the evening the bird observatory hosted a meeting of the local historical society, with 62 people attending. They were treated to a presentation about the history of the bird observatory, and our role in bird ringing and conservation.

Revtangen BO May 3rd

Light southeasterlies in the morning, turning SSE and increasing around 10 and the nets were closed around 11.30. Nets were open again a couple of hours in the evening. Netmeter hours approx. 2200. 

Ringed: Woodpigeon 1, collared dove 1, wryneck 1, meadow pipit 3, dunnock 1, redstart 1, robin 2, "Greenland" wheatear 2, blackbird 2, blackcap 2, willow warbler 6, chiffchaff 4, pied flycatcher 1, great tit 1, magpie 1, house sparrow 2, greenfinch 16, lesser redpoll 11, mealy redpoll 9, linnet 1, goldfinch 2. Total = 70. Also 25 controls, including i danish greenfinch and a british lesser redpoll. 

The wryneck is a quite rare catch at Revtangen, and a typical spring bird. Vendehals.
Goldfinch, both birds are 2cy. Male top, female lower. Notice the difference in the shape of the red feathering above the eye. Stillits, begge er 2K. Hann øverst, hunn nederst. Legg merke til forskjeller i utbredelsen av det røde, særlig over øyet. 

Ringmerket: Ringdue 1, tyrkerdue 1, vendehals 1, heipiplerke 3, jernspurv 1, rødstjert 1, rødstrupe 2, steinskvett 2 (leucorhoa), svarttrost 2, munk 2, løvsanger 6, gransanger 4, svarthvit fluesnapper 1, kjøttmeis 1, skjære 1, gråspurv 2, grønnfink 16, brunsisik 11, gråsisk 9, tornirisk 1, stillits 2. Total = 70. Også 25 kontroller, bl.a. grønnfink med dansk ring og brunsisik med britisk ring.

        
A new colourringing project is launched in Norway in 2015, at least four ringing groups including Revtangen bird observatory will ring northern wheatears with yellow colourrings with a black 3-letter inscription. Check your wheatears! Steinskvett, ny art som i likhet med linerler og skjærpiplerker får påsatt gule fargeringer.
