Revtangen BO July 22nd

No ringing today, but the moth traps were up last night. Still no summer temperatures, but 14 degrees and light southerlies are as good as it gets these days....

The catch was not impressive, with 53 species and nothing of any real interest. This Buff-tip (Phalera bucephala) was a small highlight, though, with only a handful of records from Revtangen BO before.

Oksehodespinner (Phalera bucephala). Arten kan leve på det meste som finnes av norske løvtrær.

Revtangen BO July 20th

Light breeze from a mainly westerly direction. Most nets were up from around 08-15, netmeter hours approx. 2000. Fairly quiet, few birds around.

Ringed: Collared dove 1, barn swallow 1, northern wheatear 1, chiffchaff 1, willow warbler 5, starling 1, house sparrow 5, lesser redpoll 1. Total = 16. Also 6 controls.

Ringmerket: Tyrkerdue 1, låvesvale 1, steinskvett 1, gransanger 1, løvsanger 5, stær 1, gråspurv 5, brunsisik 1. Total = 16. Også 6 kontroller.

Collared dove. Our 32nd this season, an amazing number....Årets tyrkerdue nr. 32 på Revtangen OS.

3 Robinson-traps produced 49 species of moths, about half the number of species that we SHOULD have at this time of the year, and absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. The cold summer and westerly winds is very bad also for moth trapping, no surprise there.

A few insects news: The moth traps contained 45 species, not very impressive in July and nothing out of the ordinary. More interesting was this sawfly Acantholyda posticalis, a species capable of inflicting massive damage to pine forest. There is only one previous record from Rogaland county listed in the Norwegian species information portal "Artskart".

A couple of flies not previously record from Revtangen BO: Rhagio lineola (above) and Rhagoletis alternata (below).

Revtangen BO July 11th

We've had a few very windy days, and the wind and salt has done some damage to the vegetation in the garden, in particular on the black elderberry bushes. But that's just the price we pay for being close to the sea....

Today there was decent conditions with clouds and little wind in the morning, and most of the nets were up from 06-12 when it started raining. Netmeter hours approx. 1500.

Ringed: Collared dove 2, barn swallow 2, white wagtail 1, meadow pipit 2, northern wheatear 1, european robin 1, song thrush 1, common whitethroat 1, blackcap 4, willow warbler 11, great tit 1, starling 9, house sparrow 21, greenfinch 14, siskin 1, mealy redpoll 2, lesser redpoll 3, linnet 7. Total = 84.

Revtangen BO July 2nd

Summer suddenly arrived, and this afternoon we reached 28 degrees which is by far the warmest day of the year. The winds were quite strong from the SE, ony a few nets were open around the feeder from around 9-13.

Ringed: Barn swallow 4 pulli, willow warbler 1, house sparrow 12, greenfinch 2. Total = 19. Also 4 controls.

Ringmerket: Låvesvale 4 pulli, løvsanger 1, gråspurv 12, grønnfink 2. Total = 19. Også 4 kontroller.

Today was mainly about garden work, and the main project was the construction of the new garden pond. The digging was done last summer, and today we put down the underlayment and rubber pond liner. We also filled it half-way up to check for leaks. So far it looks good!

In July the content of the moth traps are often more interesting than the birds. We use 3 Robinson-traps to record nocturnal lepidoptera and other insects. The warm night brought us two new species never before recorded at Revtangen BO: Ruby Tiger (Phragmatobia fuliginosa) and Red-necked Footman (Atolmis rubricollis).
Ruby Tiger. Rustvingespinner

 Red-necked Footman. Rødhalslavspinner.
