1.Vi observerte en LEVENDE rugde
2. Vi fant den vi har leitet etter hele tiden, den med russisk ring!
2K rugde med russisk ring, Ryggstranda, Randaberg 16.februar. 2Y Woodcock with russian ring.
This winter has been the coldest in Western Norway for more than 20 years. It has of course had a negative effect on wintering birds, but the die-off we have witnessed among woodcocks is probably the single most dramatic incident ever recorded. The wintering population was believed to consist of "some hundred individuals". So far, more than 500 have been picked up dead and hundreds more have been reported dead. So, at least we know that we can (could...) count our wintering woodcocks by the thousands, rather than hundreds. Only a handfull have been sighted alive during February, and we belive that 99% have died. Only a few people have really searched for dead woodcocks, and we belive that the 500 found represent only a tiny fraction of the true number of dead birds. Today we found 68 dead birds in a small area close to Stavanger two men searching for 1,5 hours. Included among them the first one wearing a ring, from Russia. This represents the first recovery of a Russian-ringed woodcock in Norway.
